Theatre, course Greek tragedy in Epidavros
by Kar
en de Vries

The course will be based on a classic tragedy from the family history of the royal family of Argos, such as that of Electra or Agamemnon. Greek tragedy stands for intense emotions and poetic lyrics. How does one act in order to unite lyrics and motion so that it becomes music?
Every morning we will start by doing some exercising of the voice and singing.

The speaking choir is a fixed part of every Greek tragedy and it is so exciting to let this group engage in a choreography as one, whilst at the same time consisting of different individuals. Together we'll finally perform in front of an audience. With the aid of the mythological tales we may be able to situate the play in the Greece of the ancient world.

This summer Karidiès will work together with professor in theatre at the university of Athens, Platon Mavromoustákos and with Herman Altena, translater of Greek tragedies. In the first week the group will have the opportunity to follow a lecture at the international Summercourse "Ancient Greek Drama". The students of the summercourse will follow one of our rehearsals.

At the ancient theatre of Epidavros you can have the experience of how it feels to give your own voice a chance to carry to the highest tier of this acoustically unrivaled amphitheatre. During this 15-day theatrecourse you get 40 hours of lessons being part of a program with other cultural activities such as a visit to both theatres, Mycenae and enough spare time to enjoy Greek country-life. We'll visit 2 performances at the theatre of Epidavros, where during the summer festival the classic tragedies and comedies will be played every weekend.
The lessons will be taught at the Pevkotheatro, a small open-air theatre overlooking the harbour, in the shade of two big
pine-trees.
